Practical, hands-on training brought together council officers from across Victoria to strengthen their understanding of Building Act compliance and enforcement.

VMBSG recently delivered a full-day Building Act Compliance and Enforcement Training session for council officers involved in building compliance, enforcement, inspections and authorised person functions.

Hosted by the City of Melbourne, the training was presented by Bronwyn Weir from Weir Legal and Consulting and Stuart Bateson from Ryt Business Solutions and Ryt Training Solutions.

The session brought together legal expertise and practical enforcement experience, providing participants with a highly relevant look at the challenges councils face when responding to building non-compliance.

Across the day, participants explored key areas including delegations and authorisations, Part 8 notices and orders, inspection planning, powers of entry, search warrants, evidence gathering, witness statements, conflict management and prosecution considerations.

Practical exercises based on realistic council scenarios gave participants the opportunity to apply enforcement principles and test their understanding in an engaging and supportive environment.

The training was very well received, with participants taking away practical knowledge and strategies they can apply directly in their day-to-day roles.

Attendees joined us from a range of organisations, including Fire Rescue Victoria, Merri-bek City Council, Brimbank City Council, Frankston City Council, Latrobe City Council and Alpine Resorts Victoria.

Could your council host a future session?

VMBSG is keen to work with more councils to deliver this training across Victoria.

Hosting is straightforward. The host council provides the venue and VMBSG arranges the catering and delivery of the training.

The session is open to attendees from all councils and relevant organisations. A host council does not need to provide 25 participants of its own. We simply need a minimum of 25 attendees in total for the session to proceed.
