135 building industry professionals came together for a practical, informative and engaging day focused on building enforcement.
VMBSG’s Mid-year Professional Development Training Day brought together 135 people from across the building industry for a full day of education, insightful discussion, practical ideas and plenty of entertaining moments at Rydges Melbourne.
This year’s program, Practical Enforcement, Real Outcomes: Clear Processes, Sound Decisions, Defensible Results, was developed to provide building surveyors, building inspectors and other industry professionals with practical guidance they could take back and apply in their day-to-day work.
The program explored the many stages of the building enforcement process, from preparing an informant statement and conducting effective interviews through to court proceedings, appeals, post-hearing obligations and ongoing compliance.

Participants heard from legal practitioners, investigative experts and representatives from the Building Appeals Board, with each session offering practical explanations, real examples and valuable insight into the challenges involved in enforcement work.
The day concluded with an expert panel discussion facilitated by Brett Turner and featuring Steven Baxas, State Building Surveyor, Elizabeth Flanagan, Bronwyn Weir and Tara Schultz. The panel provided an opportunity to bring the day’s topics together and explore questions raised by attendees.

The atmosphere in the room was fantastic. Attendees were engaged, questions were flowing and the presentations prompted plenty of thoughtful discussion about enforcement practices, professional judgement and defensible decision-making.
