VMBSG News Updates

A new two-hub format is making it easier for building professionals across Victoria to participate, connect and learn together.

The VMBSG Women’s Network is excited to present its next in-person professional development seminar, Building Enforcement in Practice: Rural vs Metropolitan Council Challenges, on Wednesday 2 September 2026.

In an exciting first for the Women’s Network, the seminar will be held concurrently at St Kilda Town Hall and Benalla Town Hall, creating both a metropolitan and regional hub for the event.

Distance can often make attending in-person professional development difficult, particularly for those working in regional and rural councils. By delivering the seminar across two connected venues, VMBSG is helping more people participate without requiring everyone to travel to Melbourne.

Attendees can select the location that best suits them, while still experiencing the complete program. Presentations from both venues will be streamed live between St Kilda and Benalla, allowing everyone to see and hear each session, regardless of which hub they attend.

Building enforcement from two perspectives

Building enforcement can look very different depending on a council’s location, available resources, community context and the types of issues its officers encounter.

This practical seminar will explore the challenges faced by both rural and metropolitan councils, using real-world examples to examine decision-making, risk, public safety and the use of available enforcement tools.

By bringing the two perspectives together, attendees will gain a broader understanding of how councils respond to unsafe, damaged or non-compliant buildings in different municipal settings. The seminar will also provide an opportunity to learn from the experiences of other practitioners and connect with colleagues working across Victoria.

Who can attend?

The session is open to people working across all areas of local government building departments and the wider Victorian building regulatory industry, including Municipal Building Surveyors, building surveyors, inspectors, compliance officers, authorised persons, administrative and technical staff, team leaders and managers.

While presented by the VMBSG Women’s Network, everyone is welcome to attend. The Network welcomes women, men, gender-diverse individuals and allies who support the growth, advancement and retention of women within the building regulatory industry.

The seminar will be held from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm, and registration is free. Places at both locations are limited and all attendees must register in advance.

Choose either St Kilda Town Hall or Benalla Town Hall when booking and join colleagues across Victoria for one connected, practical and informative professional development experience.
