Judgement Calls in Complex Building Issues:

Navigating constraints, existing conditions and competing priorities

Date: Thursday 15 and Friday 16 October 2026
Venue: Yarrawonga-Mulwala Golf Club Resort
Location: Golf Club Road, Mulwala NSW

The VMBSG 2026 Annual State Conference will bring together municipal and private building surveyors, council building teams, government representatives and industry stakeholders for two days of practical professional development, discussion and networking.

This year’s theme, Judgement Calls in Complex Building Issues: Navigating constraints, existing conditions and competing priorities, focuses on the real-world decisions building surveyors and building control professionals are required to make when projects are constrained, existing conditions are unclear, and technical, legislative and practical priorities compete.

The conference will explore the challenges of applying the NCC, referenced Australian Standards and Victorian building legislation in complex situations, with a strong focus on practical interpretation, risk awareness, professional judgement and defensible decision-making.

Through case studies, targeted technical sessions, an interactive risk and ESM workshop, and discussion of key issues including alternative solutions, waterproofing and legal considerations, delegates will gain practical insights to support safer buildings and more consistent outcomes from approval through to occupancy.

Keynote Speaker

VMBSG is pleased to welcome Dr Nicole Bijlsma as the 2026 keynote speaker.

Dr Bijlsma is a building biologist, bestselling author and founder of the Healthy Home movement in Australia. Her keynote presentation, Water-Damaged Buildings: Opportunities and Ramifications for Building Surveyors, will examine the technical, professional and occupant health implications of water intrusion and mould growth.
