Tiny Homes: Guidance, Challenges and Practical Issues will be held online on Tuesday 19 May, from 11:00am to 12:30pm.
Presented jointly by the Office of the State Building Surveyor and Russell Kennedy, this VMBSG workshop will explore the key issues, practical challenges and areas of uncertainty currently arising in practice in relation to tiny homes.
Building on the recent guidance issued by the State Building Surveyor, the session will consider how these matters are presenting across Victorian councils, where interpretation and approach may differ, and the regulatory and legal considerations practitioners need to keep in mind.
Tiny homes are an increasingly common area of enquiry for councils, particularly as broader pressures such as housing shortages, affordability concerns and community expectations continue to shape conversations around alternative housing options. While these pressures are important, the session will keep a strong focus on safety, compliance and defensible decision-making.
The discussion will include practical issues such as smoke alarms, sanitary facilities and other basic building requirements, as well as the broader questions council practitioners are navigating when responding to tiny home enquiries and proposals.
A Q&A component will be included at the end of the session, giving VMBSG members and council practitioners the opportunity to raise examples from their own municipalities and work through them with the presenters.
