Honouring John Anagianis’ legacy by recognising the rising professionals helping shape the future of municipal building surveying.
VMBSG is proud to announce the establishment of the John Anagianis Award for Rising Excellence in Municipal Building Surveying, a new annual award honouring the legacy of the late John Anagianis, former Municipal Building Surveyor at the City of Kingston and former Treasurer of the VMBSG Committee.
The award will recognise and celebrate a rising municipal building surveying professional who demonstrates the professional integrity, leadership potential and commitment to others that John exemplified and championed throughout his career.
The inaugural recipient will be announced at the 2026 VMBSG Annual State Conference in Yarrawonga-Mulwala on Thursday 15 October.

Honouring John’s legacy
John was widely respected within both his organisation and the broader building surveying profession for his professionalism, integrity and unwavering commitment to supporting and developing others.
He was also a valued member of VMBSG, serving as Treasurer of the VMBSG Committee from the 2020/2021 year through to the end of the 2023/2024 year.
John’s contribution to the profession extended well beyond his technical expertise. Throughout his career, he demonstrated strong and principled leadership, a deep commitment to mentoring staff and fostering growth, the ability to build high-performing teams and a steadfast dedication to excellence in municipal building surveying.
He had the ability to foster a culture where individuals felt empowered, supported and motivated to excel.
John believed strongly in developing people. He invested in those around him, shared his knowledge and helped build teams where people were encouraged to grow, develop their confidence and achieve their potential.
The impact of that approach is reflected in the purpose of this award. It is not simply about recognising technical capability. It is about recognising emerging professionals who demonstrate leadership, integrity and a commitment to supporting others.
Supporting the next generation
The municipal building surveying profession is increasingly recognising the need to support and develop the next generation of practitioners as many experienced Municipal Building Surveyors approach the later stages of their careers.
John was deeply committed to developing emerging professionals and ensuring they were equipped with the confidence, capability and support required to succeed.
Establishing this award reflects both John’s personal legacy and the broader need within the industry to encourage, recognise and retain new talent. By recognising emerging practitioners who demonstrate not only technical capability, but leadership, integrity and a commitment to supporting others, VMBSG hopes to help strengthen the future of the profession.
